What would it look like, feel like and what would you be
able to do with it?
The perfect motorcycle would be fast and be able to carve
corners with the best.
The perfect
motorcycle would be comfortable to ride on a cross-country journey and sturdy
enough to carry what’s needed for the trip.
The perfect motorcycle would be able to take a poorly
maintained or gravel / dirt road and do it with comfort and confidence.
The perfect motorcycle would also have
the looks and sound to attract attention where ever it was.
Perhaps the perfect motorcycle has yet to be made, however
the class of motorcycles known as Adventure Touring is the closest to perfection
so far.
Adventure Touring motorcycles are much more then overgrown dirt bikes
Adventure Touring motorcycles have been well promoted as a
motorcycle that can be taken almost anywhere, with off road being focus, however motorcycles in this class are so much
more.
The typical Adventure Touring motorcycle available today is
powered by an engine that has sport bike performance numbers and yet has been
re-tuned / programmed for riding “real” roads. The electronics package that control engine performance,
braking and suspension settings come straight from the racing world. Add powerful brakes, a top of the line
suspension and a seating position that’s comfortable. Finish the package off with the ability to carry more stuff
then most touring motorcycles and handling that compares to a sport bike and
you have the perfect motorcycle.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure
The BMW GS - The current "leader" in the Adventure category
The KTM 1190 Adventure R - The more "dirt" worthy of the Adventure class
The Ducati Multistrada (This is a 2013 Gran Turismo) - The best pavement carving Adventure motorcycle that is OK getting a little dirty
There are more examples out there and I'm sure more will come to market soon.
